Paste to Markdown: turn copied rich text or HTML into Markdown. For plain text, apply heading and list actions yourself, then copy.
What is Paste to Markdown?
Paste to Markdown is a free online tool that converts what you copied, whether rich text, an excerpt of a web page or HTML, to Markdown in your browser. Paste it into the box to get headings, lists, links and tables as Markdown. Plain text is converted with actions that you choose.
What it supports
- Formatted content from the clipboard: headings, bold and italic text, lists, links and simple tables.
- Plain text, where you apply heading and list actions yourself, so no structure is invented.
- Copy the Markdown or download it.
Good to know
- Scripts, styles and embedded content are removed, and images become their alt text. Layout and colors are not kept.
- Plain text has no structure, so the tool does not guess titles or lists. It only does what you ask.
How do I use Paste to Markdown?
- Copy content from a page, a document or an email, and paste it into the box.
- Review the Markdown. Select text there, then use Heading level and Make heading, Bullet list, Numbered list, or Link address and Make link.
- Copy the Markdown or download it.
Example
A heading and a numbered list copied as HTML.
<h2>Agenda</h2><ol><li>Budget</li><li>Hiring</li></ol>## Agenda
1. Budget
2. HiringThe heading and the numbered list are written as Markdown.
Limits and privacy
Limits
- Text: up to 2,000,000 bytes of UTF-8 (about 2 MB). Accented letters and emoji take more than one byte each. Larger input or generated text is rejected.
Is my content sent to a server?
No. Your content and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. OCR and PDF reading download processing files, including OCR language data and the PDF worker, from this same site only when those tools run; no content goes to third parties. Markdown previews show external images as alt text instead of loading them.
Copying puts a result on your clipboard and downloading saves it as a file, but only when you press the button. The file is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
