Convert Markdown to plain text without losing code or punctuation. Choose how links appear, then copy the text or download a TXT file.
What is Markdown to Text?
Markdown to Text is a free online tool that converts Markdown to plain text in your browser. It removes the markup but keeps your words, code and punctuation, and you choose whether links keep only their label, the label and the URL, or just the URL.
What it supports
- Headings, emphasis, lists, quotes, links, tables and code blocks, written as readable text.
- Three link styles: label only, label and URL, or URL only.
- Copy the text or download it as a TXT file.
Good to know
- The tool reads the Markdown structure instead of deleting symbols with a search and replace, so code and punctuation are kept.
- A TXT file has no layout, colors or fonts. Only the text remains.
How do I use Markdown to Text?
- Paste your Markdown or open an MD file.
- Under Links, choose Link text only, Text and URL or URL only. With Auto off, press Convert.
- Copy the plain text or download a TXT file.
Example
A heading, a link and a line of inline code.

Run npm test before you push. The markers are gone, the link keeps only its label (the default style) and the code stays in the text.
Limits and privacy
Limits
- Text: up to 2,000,000 bytes of UTF-8 (about 2 MB). Accented letters and emoji take more than one byte each. Larger input or generated text is rejected.
Is my content sent to a server?
No. Your content and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. OCR and PDF reading download processing files, including OCR language data and the PDF worker, from this same site only when those tools run; no content goes to third parties. Markdown previews show external images as alt text instead of loading them.
Copying puts a result on your clipboard and downloading saves it as a file, but only when you press the button. The file is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
