Convert Excel to Markdown: open an XLSX file, pick a sheet or a cell range and get a Markdown table without uploading the file.
What is Excel to Markdown?
Excel to Markdown is a free online tool that converts a sheet, or a range of cells, of an Excel XLSX file to a Markdown table in your browser. Choose the sheet and, if you want, a range such as A1:C10, then copy or download the table. The file is not uploaded.
What it supports
- XLSX files.
- Any sheet of the workbook, or a range such as A1:B3.
- Stored cell values are read as text. Excel display formats are not reproduced; zeros or digits already lost in Excel cannot be recovered.
Good to know
- The First row is the header option is on by default. Turn it off to keep that row as data and generate column names.
- A formula gives the value Excel last saved for it and is not recalculated. Cells formatted as dates are written as ISO timestamps in UTC.
- Merged cells, formatting, macros, charts and Excel number formats are not carried over.
How do I use Excel to Markdown?
- Use Open file or drop an XLSX into Excel file.
- Choose Sheet, optionally enter an A1 Cell range such as A1:B3, and set First row is the header.
- Copy the Markdown table or download it as an MD file.
Example
A small stock sheet.
[Excel sheet "Stock", range A1:B3]
Product | Stock
Tea | 120
Coffee | 45| Product | Stock |
| --- | --- |
| Tea | 120 |
| Coffee | 45 |
The first row becomes the header row, and the numbers are kept as written.
Limits and privacy
Limits
- File: up to 20,000,000 bytes (about 20 MB). Larger or unreadable files are rejected, and the text taken from a file is also limited to 2,000,000 bytes.
- Workbook: up to 50 sheets, 10,000 rows, 200 columns and 200,000 cells in total.
- Tables: a table with more than 50,000 cells is rejected.
Is my content sent to a server?
No. Your content and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. OCR and PDF reading download processing files, including OCR language data and the PDF worker, from this same site only when those tools run; no content goes to third parties. Markdown previews show external images as alt text instead of loading them.
Copying puts a result on your clipboard and downloading saves it as a file, but only when you press the button. The file is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
