Convert Markdown tables to Excel: download an XLSX file whose cells stay text, so leading zeros survive and nothing becomes a formula.
What is Markdown to Excel?
Markdown to Excel is a free online tool that exports the tables in your Markdown as a real Excel XLSX workbook in your browser. Each table becomes a sheet and every cell is stored as text, so leading zeros survive and nothing turns into a formula.
What it supports
- GFM tables, one sheet for each table, named Table 1, Table 2 and so on.
- An XLSX download that opens in Excel, LibreOffice and Google Sheets.
Good to know
- Only tables are exported. Text outside a table is not turned into rows.
- A cell that starts with =, +, - or @ is written as text, never as a formula.
- Because every cell is text, Excel does not treat the numbers as numbers until you convert them there.
How do I use Markdown to Excel?
- Paste or open Markdown that contains one or more tables.
- Review Tables found, then press Generate .xlsx.
- Download the XLSX file.
Example
A table with a code that starts with zeros.
| code | qty |
| --- | --- |
| 00123 | 5 |The XLSX has one sheet, Table 1, and the code 00123 is stored as the text 00123.

- Workbook: up to 50 sheets, 10,000 rows, 200 columns and 200,000 cells in total.

Is my content sent to a server?
No. Your content and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. OCR and PDF reading download processing files, including OCR language data and the PDF worker, from this same site only when those tools run; no content goes to third parties. Markdown previews show external images as alt text instead of loading them.
Copying puts a result on your clipboard and downloading saves it as a file, but only when you press the button. The file is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
