About Jsonformatter
Jsonformatter offers free browser tools for structured data, Markdown, documents, images and diagrams, plus Base64, URL and JWT. Format, validate, convert, compare or preview content without an account.
What you can do here
Type or paste your text, or open a file from your device, choose a tool, run it and read the result. When you are happy with it, copy it or download it.
There are no accounts, document history, cloud saving or share links. Open local files or download results; remote web address import and a public developer API are not available.
Who it is for
The tools are meant for everyday work with structured text. They can be useful for:
- Developers who need to read an API response, find a syntax error in a config file or compare two versions of a JSON document.
- QA engineers and testers who check payloads, decode a JWT to see its claims or validate data against a JSON Schema.
- Data analysts who move data between CSV and JSON and want to see its structure before using it.
- Writers and documentation authors who preview a README or move content between Markdown and HTML, Word, Excel or PDF.
- Students learning JSON, YAML, XML or CSV who want to see how the same data looks in each format.
How the tools work
Each tool runs in a dedicated Web Worker, a separate thread inside your browser. The heavy work of parsing, formatting and converting happens there, so the page stays responsive while a large document is being processed.
When the input is not valid, the tool tells you what went wrong and, where possible, points to the line and column of the problem. That makes it quicker to find a missing comma, an unclosed bracket or a wrong indentation in a long file.
Your text stays in your browser
Text and local files, including Word, Excel, PDF and images, are read in your browser and never uploaded. OCR and PDF reading download their processing files, including OCR language data and the PDF worker, from this same site only when those tools run; no content goes to third parties. Markdown previews show external images as alt text. Text stays in tab memory until reload or close; local file inputs need reopening after navigation.

Limits
Because everything runs on your own device, the tools have limits that keep the browser from freezing. It helps to know them before you start:
- Each run accepts up to 2,000,000 bytes of input, about 2 MB. Results larger than 2 MB are not produced in full.
- Very deeply nested documents are rejected with a message that explains why.
- The tree view shows documents of up to 200,000 nodes.
- The JWT decoder only decodes the header and the payload. It does not verify the signature, so it cannot tell you whether a token is genuine.
- Converting between formats can change how data is represented. Check the result and keep your original. If you open a CSV file in a spreadsheet, it may read some values as formulas or change their type, so import it as text.
How we improve the site
The site uses optional measurement of tool use, page views and performance, which is on by default and can be turned off with the button in the footer. For each tool run it records only four values: the tool, the outcome (completed, input rejected or technical error), the page language and whether this browser has visited before. It never records your text.
These counts show which tools fail or reject input most often, which helps decide what to fix first. Emails from people who use the tools are the other source: a short description of what you tried and what happened is the most useful report.
How the measurement works is explained in the Privacy Policy
