Convert an image to Markdown with OCR in your browser: read text from a PNG or JPEG, correct it, then copy or download. Accuracy varies.
What is Image to Markdown?
Image to Markdown is a free online tool that reads text from a PNG or JPEG image with OCR in your browser and turns it into editable Markdown. Check the recognized text against the picture, fix the mistakes, then copy or download the result.
What it supports
- PNG and JPEG images, such as screenshots and photos of notes.
- Recognition of English, Portuguese and Spanish text.
- An editable result to correct by hand before you copy or download it.
Good to know
- OCR is never perfect. Accuracy depends on resolution, contrast, fonts and layout, and characters such as O and 0, or l and 1, are easily confused. Check the result against the image.
- The text comes out as plain lines. Structure such as tables, columns and lists is not guaranteed to be recognized, so add the Markdown you need while you correct it.
- The OCR engine and its language files are loaded from this site, and the image is not uploaded.
How do I use Image to Markdown?
- Use Open file, drop a PNG or JPEG, or paste an image into Paste an image here (Ctrl+V or Cmd+V).
- Choose Recognition language (English, Português or Español), then press Recognize. Check progress or use Cancel.
- Correct the recognized text, then copy or download the Markdown.
Example
A screenshot of a short note.

Meeting notes
- Send the budgetThe tool returns the text it recognizes, here "Meeting notes" and "- Send the budget". Check each line against the picture, because letters and symbols can be misread.
Limits and privacy
Limits
- File: up to 20,000,000 bytes (about 20 MB). Larger or unreadable files are rejected, and the text taken from a file is also limited to 2,000,000 bytes.
- Image: PNG or JPEG up to 16,000,000 pixels in total (16 megapixels) and 16,384 pixels on each side. Recognition reads English, Portuguese and Spanish, and stops after 120 seconds.
Is my content sent to a server?
No. Your content and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. OCR and PDF reading download processing files, including OCR language data and the PDF worker, from this same site only when those tools run; no content goes to third parties. Markdown previews show external images as alt text instead of loading them.
Copying puts a result on your clipboard and downloading saves it as a file, but only when you press the button. The file is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
