Convert HTML to Markdown from pasted markup or a local file. Scripts never run; headings, lists, links and simple tables carry over.
What is HTML to Markdown?
HTML to Markdown is a free online tool that converts HTML to Markdown in your browser. Paste markup or open a local HTML file to get headings, lists, links and simple tables as Markdown, without running anything from the page.
What it supports
- Headings, paragraphs, bold and italic text, links, lists, task lists, strikethrough, code blocks and simple tables.
- Pasted HTML or a local HTML file.
Good to know
- Scripts, styles, embeds, SVG, math, media and remote assets are removed before the conversion, and images become their alt text. Nothing is executed or fetched.
- Layout, CSS and comments are not kept. A table with merged or nested cells, or with rows of different lengths, is refused.
How do I use HTML to Markdown?
- Paste the HTML, or open a local HTML file.
- With Auto off, press Convert, then review the editable Markdown.
- Copy the Markdown or download it as an MD file.
Example
A snippet with a heading, a link, bold text and a script.
<h1>Hello</h1>
<p>Read the <a href="https://example.com/docs">docs</a> or <strong>ask us</strong>.</p>
<script>alert(1)</script># Hello
Read the [docs](https://example.com/docs) or **ask us**.The script is dropped. The heading, the link and the bold text become Markdown.
Limits and privacy
Limits
- Text: up to 2,000,000 bytes of UTF-8 (about 2 MB). Accented letters and emoji take more than one byte each. Larger input or generated text is rejected.
Is my content sent to a server?
No. Your content and files are processed in your browser and never uploaded. OCR and PDF reading download processing files, including OCR language data and the PDF worker, from this same site only when those tools run; no content goes to third parties. Markdown previews show external images as alt text instead of loading them.
Copying puts a result on your clipboard and downloading saves it as a file, but only when you press the button. The file is created in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
