Content Policy

This policy explains how to use Jsonformatter responsibly. The site is simple: you type or paste text, or open it from a local file, the tools process it in your browser, and the result stays with you. Because of that, most of this policy is about good habits on your side, plus what you can expect from us.

How the site works

Jsonformatter offers tools to format, validate and convert JSON, YAML, XML, CSV, HTML and CSS, compare JSON documents, validate and generate JSON Schema, encode and decode Base64 and URLs, and decode JWTs.

All processing happens in your browser, in a Web Worker. The text in the editor and any local file you open are never uploaded, stored or shared. There are no accounts, no history, no save or share links, no import from a URL and no public API. You never publish anything on the site, and nothing you enter is visible to other people.

Legitimate use

Use Jsonformatter to format, validate and convert data that you have permission to handle, such as your own data or data you are authorized to process. Typical examples:

  • Reading and debugging a response from an API you work with.
  • Checking a configuration file for syntax errors before you deploy it.
  • Converting an export from one format to another, for example CSV to JSON.
  • Learning how a format works by trying small examples.
  • Testing your own code with made-up sample data.

Secrets and sensitive data

Do not paste secrets, such as passwords, access tokens, API keys or private keys, or other data that you are not allowed to process.

The tools run in your browser and your text is not sent to the server, but the site does not inspect your text. It cannot tell whether what you paste is sensitive or whether you are allowed to use it, so please decide before you paste.

Good practice for sensitive data

  • Replace real names, emails, IDs and other personal values with placeholders before you paste.
  • Remove tokens, keys and passwords from a payload before you work with it.
  • Use made-up sample data when you only need to test structure or syntax.
  • On a shared or public computer, clear the editor and close the tab when you are done.

Unlawful or abusive use

Do not use Jsonformatter for anything unlawful, to harm or harass other people, or to try to gain unauthorized access to any system.

This includes using the tools to prepare or inspect data you obtained without permission, such as leaked credentials or other people’s private records.

Resource abuse

The tools are made for people using the site in a browser. Do not use scripts, bots or other automation to put heavy or repeated load on the site, and do not try to overload it. The site has no public developer API.

Each run accepts up to about 2 MB of input, and very deeply nested input is rejected. These limits keep the tools responsive in your browser. Do not try to get around them with automation; split large data into smaller parts instead.

Results you rely on

The tools aim to be accurate, but you are responsible for checking a result before you use it in something that matters. Pay special attention to these cases:

  • Converting between formats can change how data is represented, for example types, ordering or comments. Check the result and keep your original.
  • The JWT decoder only decodes the header and the payload. It does not verify the signature, so a decoded token is not proof that the token is genuine.
  • When you open CSV in a spreadsheet, text that looks like a formula may be treated as a formula and values may be retyped, such as numbers or dates. Import the file as text when the exact values matter.

What Jsonformatter does and does not do

Jsonformatter does not inspect or store the text you enter, and it is not a moderation service. It has no accounts, so it has no way to take down content or suspend users.

Nothing you enter is saved or shared by the site. The optional measurement of tool use, page views and performance never includes your text.

Updates

We may update this policy as the site changes. The version on this page is the current one.

All tools

Format, validate and convert JSON, YAML, XML, CSV, HTML, CSS and Markdown, plus Base64, URL and JWT.

JSON

  • JSON Formatter

Format JSON with one consistent layout: even indentation, one value per line, your values untouched. Runs the same formatter as JSON Beautifier.

  • JSON Validator

Check whether your text is valid JSON. If it is not, see the first problem with its line and column, highlighted in your text.

  • JSON Diff

Compare two JSON documents by structure, ignoring key order, and see every added, removed and changed path in one list.

  • JSON Schema Validator

Validate JSON against a JSON Schema (draft 2020-12, or draft-07 through $schema) and see each error with the path where it occurs.

  • JSON Schema Generator

Generate a JSON Schema (draft 2020-12) from a sample JSON document, ready to copy and refine.

  • JSON Beautifier

Beautify minified or unevenly spaced JSON into readable, indented text, with your values untouched. Runs the same formatter as JSON Formatter.

Convert JSON

  • JSON to CSV

Convert a JSON list of objects, or the first list of objects inside an object, to plain CSV text.

  • CSV to JSON

Convert CSV to a JSON array of objects, using the header row as keys. Comma, semicolon and tab separators are detected, and values stay as text.

  • JSON to XML

Convert JSON to plain, readable XML, with your numbers and text copied exactly as written.

  • XML to JSON

Convert XML to JSON, with attributes as @name keys and repeated elements gathered into arrays so the structure carries over.

  • JSON to YAML

Convert JSON to readable block YAML with 2 or 4 spaces of indentation, keeping every value and every number exactly as you wrote it.

  • YAML to JSON

Convert YAML to JSON with anchors and aliases resolved. A file with several documents becomes a JSON array.

YAML

  • YAML Validator

Check whether your YAML is valid under the YAML 1.2 Core rules, in one or several documents, and see the line and column of the first problem.

  • YAML Viewer

Explore a YAML document as a tree you can open and close, with anchors, tags and aliases marked on the row where they appear.

  • YAML Formatter

Format YAML with consistent indentation while keeping comments and values.

HTML, XML and CSS

  • HTML Formatter

Format HTML into readable, indented markup. The result is plain text: scripts do not run and nothing in your HTML is loaded.

  • XML Formatter

Format XML with clear indentation while preserving its content and meaning.

  • CSS Beautifier

Beautify minified CSS into readable rules, one declaration per line, without changing what the CSS does. Runs the same formatter as CSS Formatter.

  • CSS Formatter

Format CSS you maintain with one consistent style: the same indentation, spacing and spelling everywhere. Runs the same formatter as CSS Beautifier.

Encode & Decode

  • Base64 Encode/Decode

Encode text to Base64 or decode Base64 back to text as UTF-8, with an option for the URL-safe Base64URL alphabet.

  • URL Encode/Decode

Encode or decode text with %XX sequences, either as a URL component or as a full URL whose separators stay intact.

  • JWT Decoder

Decode a JWT in your browser to read its header and payload, see the exp, iat and nbf dates and whether it has expired. The signature is not verified.
